Of the 62 elected candidates, here is a breakdown by community declared. The last column gives the distribution of communities in Mauritius according to the 1972 census.

Interestingly, some candidates who declared themselves as Hindus (e.g. Pravind Jugnauth) and Muslims (e.g Sameer Udhin Chitbahal) were not chosen as best losers despite obtaining a large proportion of votes because the Hindu community is already well represented in Parliament with 36 elected candidates and Muslims with 9 elected members.

To the extent that there are no successful parties, other than Alliance du Changement and Organisation du Peuple de Rodrigues (OPR), only four best losers were chosen instead of eight.
